angelina college health careers building
Located in Lufkin, Texas, Angelina College's health careers program has expanded rapidly in recent years thus requiring new facilities. SBB was challenged not only to provide functional, pleasant and calming expanded spaces for the highly intense curriculum, but also a fresh and updated image while utilizing materials and certain elements of the original mid-20th century campus architecture. To that end, freestanding limestone columns at the two story glass entrance are reflective of limestone pilasters on the earlier buildings, as is the wide hovering roofline of this element. Narrow vertical windows of other buildings are repeated but unified by metal panel wall panels and a protective sunscreen at the West facing elevation. This sun control device occurs at other critical locations as well. In short, the building is unique to the campus but respectful of its older neighbors.
The timely interior is designed with the student in mind. Classrooms, labs, and offices are wired with the latest technologies to help facilitate the learning process. Administrative and faculty offices, lecture halls, smart classrooms and an EMS lab are situated on the first floor. A spacious light filled two story lobby offers and encourages opportunity for student interaction and relaxation. The second floor houses LVN, RN and SurgTech departments as well as computer labs, seminar room, and additional faculty offices. A control room accommodates the highly computerized equipment needed to operate simulators used in the instructional labs. Natural light is provided in wide corridors of strategically placed glass openings as well as in all major office and instructional areas. SBB worked closely with the nursing staff to ensure all of their needs were met.
